- Summer Work CLUE Family 2020-21
Welcome to Germantown High School CLUE English I !
If you haven't completed or begun the summer reading assignment, please do so ASAP! You have a
couple of weeks before we start working on our summer reading unit and the tentative due date to have
the book and the following assignments completed is September 14.
[FYI - Anything highlighted in red is a hyperlink to a document, PowerPoint, or website that you will need
to access.]
Our summer reading book is Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman. It's a very interesting piece of fiction based on
Einstein's thought experiments as he developed his theory of relativity. I really hope you like it. I HIGHLY
recommend and prefer that you purchase a hard copy of the text because you will be able to use the book and all
of your annotations when you're working on your written assignments and take the book test. However, CLUE has provided a free E-book version if necessary: http://www.clue901.com/cluebooks.html.
Please begin reading and annotating. It's not a lengthy book, so take your time and don't rush through it. Marinate
in it a little bit and deeply consider the thoughts and impressions you have as you read. And please write these
thoughts down in addition to your annotations. If you are unfamiliar with the annotation process, please refer to the
Annotation Guide on the home page. REMEMBER, annotating text is much more than taking plot notes. You
should be analyzing the text for literary elements: characterization, figurative language, thematic concepts,
author's tone, point of view, style, etc.
Let's Get To Know Albert Einstein!
Most of us have a general idea about this famous scientist and may have an idea about his Theory of Relativity,
but let's dive a little deeper and get a bit more background information about Einstein, his process of thinking, and
his work to further our understanding of Lightman's book.
Please watch and read the following information and take notes about what you learn:
Very Short Biography of Albert Einstein - Feel free to investigate more, and we'll discuss it all in class.
Brief History of Thought Experiments - Feel free to investigate more, and we'll discuss it all in class.
Einstein's Thought Experiments - Feel free to investigate more, and we'll discuss it all in class.
Brief Overview:Theory of Relativity - Feel free to investigate more, and we'll discuss it all in class.
Einstein was a CLUE-kid, too!
There's no doubt that Albert Einstein was a gifted scientific genius. If he were to attend SCS today, he would
definitely be in CLUE. Therefore, what do you think you have in common with this famous gifted learner?
Please read/ study the document that outlines and defines The Traits of Giftedness as set forth by the National
Association for the Gifted. I've included the definitions of the categories for a broader understanding.
Please complete the following assignments:
1. For EACH of the four categories, select the qualities that you see in yourself as a gifted learner and provide a
specific example.
2. For EACH of the four categories, select the qualities that you see in what you've learned about Albert Einstein
from the videos, your own background knowledge of Einstein, and what is representative of him in the book
and provide specific examples.
Be prepared to share, use, and turn-in your summer work for activities that we will be doing in class.
